Destination Guide: Balearic Islands

With lush landscapes, gorgeous sunsets and breathtaking beaches, the Balearic Islands are a fabulous wedding destination.

Nestled off the east coast of Spain in the Mediterranean, the Balearics include Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera all offering something unique as a wedding destination. So whether you want a breathtaking beach escape, fabulous villa celebration or 5-star luxury, the Balearics has something for you.

With guaranteed sunshine during hot and dry summers and some incredible hidden gems to explore, the Balearics are one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean. And there’s a myriad of options for your wedding, including quaint churches, secluded coves and magnificent estates.

Our wedding guide will take the stress out of planning your wedding in the unforgettable Balearic Islands.

Wedding Hotspots in Balearic Islands

The Balearics is a group of islands clustered in the glittering waters of the Mediterranean. The central islands in the archipelago are Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, each with its own charms.

Mallorca is the destination for stunning scenery from the Sierra de Tramontana mountains to the Cabrera National Park and the stunning coastline. There’s a fabulous choice of luxury hotels and villas, or why not enjoy a celebration in the vines on one of the island's wine estates?

Ibiza might have a reputation as a party island, but it’s also incredibly popular for destination weddings. It’s perfect for a boho beach wedding in Cala Codolar or a stylish contemporary celebration in Ibiza Town itself. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, so you'll surely find some unique backdrops for your wedding photos.

Wedding Venues To Die For

If you're ready to tie the knot in the Balearics, you'll be spoilt for choice regarding unique wedding destinations. Like the boutique Hotel Cas X'orc, nestled high in Mallorca's mountains with breathtaking views.

Try Son Marroig with its clifftop marble temple for an intimate VIP-style wedding. It's one of the most iconic venues in Mallorca. Or tie the knot in style at the imposing La Fortaleza, used as a location in The Night Manager and the stylish destination where local hero Rafa Nadal hosted his wedding.

Mallorca is rich in historic buildings, and if your dream destination is a fairytale castle, try the Castell Son Claret Hotel. Step into another world in this fairytale setting of romantic courtyards and fountains, where the air is heavy with the scent of lavender and orange blossom.

Ibiza’s timeless beauty is a lure for boho couples looking to celebrate on the sand. With its secluded coves and amazing vibe, the Mediterranean party island is a fabulous place to get hitched.

La Granja is the coolest hotel on the island, a converted stone farmhouse tucked away in ten hectares of land and the perfect destination for a boho-glam celebration. For something more intimate and chic, head for the Villa Païssa d'en Bernat which oozes elegance and romance.

Nestled on Ibiza’s north coast, Hacienda Na Xamena has incredible sea views from its terraces overlooking the sea and all the luxury you could ask for. Get married against a jaw-dropping vista and enjoy the chilled Mediterranean vibe.

If you dream of a white wedding against the backdrop of a sparkling turquoise sea, try the Cotton Beach Club. This stylish resort offers couples chic and intimate ceremonies by day, then turns into a candlelit haven by night. But for the ultimate beach wedding, the Casa La Vista on the tranquil north coast enjoys its own private beach cove for a unique place to tie the knot.

Balearic Island Culture

The culture of the Balearic islands embraces a fascinating mix of influences, including Arabic, Roman and Catalan. You'll find rare circular castles, Gothic cathedrals and Roman baths alongside natural wonders, including the Cuevas del Drach with their enormous underground lake and the majestic peak of Puig Major.

You'll find everything from world-class museums and exciting galleries to local artisan studios and music festivals. Add the thriving bar, cafe and restaurant scene, and the Balearics are perfect for your wedding and honeymoon.

Balearic Island Climate

If you're planning a summer wedding, the Balearic Islands have a typically Mediterranean climate. So you can expect hot and sunny weather with little rain, sea breezes, and temperatures peaking in the low 30s at the height of summer. Mallorca is the sunniest island if you want to guarantee blue skies when you tie the knot.

If you're looking for plenty of sun, but cooler temperatures, spring and autumn average around 8-10 hours of sun a day. What’s more, the Balearics are also an inviting winter destination – with Ibiza in particular staying slightly warmer than the other island.

Legal Requirements

To get married in Ibiza, you must be legally resident for two years or at least one of you must be of the Catholic faith. If you're Catholic, speak with your local priest, who can liaise with a priest in Mallorca or Ibiza. You'll be expected to provide documents, including a valid passport, birth and confirmation certificates, certificate of no impediments and proof you've completed a pre-marriage course.

If you're not a resident or Catholic, we recommend you arrange a legal civil ceremony in your home country so the legal proceedings are covered. You can then arrange a blessing at your wedding venue. Gay marriage has been recognised in Spain since 2005.

Your Balearic Island Honeymoon

With so many incredible destinations spread across the main four islands, you won’t want to leave after your wedding. There are regular crossings, so it’s easy to island hop while basing yourself in Mallorca or Ibiza. If you’re a keen swimmer, you can spend an enchanted afternoon on one of the many uninhabited islands that can’t be reached by boat. And don’t miss out on lesser-known islands like S'Espalmador with its idyllic beaches.

For a more cosmopolitan trip, visit some of the top sites and unique markets in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. If you want to experience more of Spain, the mainland is only a short plane ride away, where fabulous destinations like Alicante and Barcelona have a real buzz with incredible culture, restaurants and nightlife.
