How Much Does A Destination Wedding Planner Really Cost?

Planning your wedding can be exciting and great fun. But on the flip side, it can also be time-consuming, daunting, and stressful – with a pinch of overwhelm thrown in. And when your heart’s set on a luxury destination wedding abroad, that feeling of overwhelm can start to build. Honestly, we totally get it.

With more questions than answers, it might feel like you should take the easy way out and just elope. But this is your dream wedding, and you deserve it. So, with so much to think about, plan, and organise, where do you start?

This is exactly why more couples look to destination wedding planners – a team of experts who know exactly what to do to spark ideas into life and make every dream a reality. So, before you even start to budget for your wedding, let’s look into what an expert destination wedding planner could cost – and what you get.

How much does a destination wedding planner cost?

It might not be a surprise that hiring a destination wedding planner's experience will come at a cost, and pricing can range from around £1,000 to £100,000 and up. But why is there such a big gap, and what determines whether you pay the lower or the higher fee?

Much depends on your event's customisation, how involved you want your planners to be, and, of course, your chosen destination and whether it’s at home or abroad. But the wide price spectrum may be easier to understand if we look into the available pricing tiers and service models.

How a wedding planner might charge

There are three main pricing structures commonly used by wedding planners, including:

The flat fee

Your planners will charge a set price, which includes a defined scope of work for everything you need. This won't change, so you have complete certainty about what you’ll pay, regardless of your overall wedding cost.

The hourly rate

Your planners will charge by the hour, usually for specific tasks or consultations. If you only need an expert hand for a few particular things, then this can be a cost-effective way to move your wedding along.

The percentage fee

Your planner will take a fee of around 10-20% of the total wedding spend. This option is common, especially for luxury destination weddings. But if your wedding costs rise, so will your fee, even if the planner's scope of work isn’t increased.

Top Tip: Ask about Planner Expenses!

Destination wedding planners also have their own costs, in terms of travel, accommodation and other costs related to assisting before and during the wedding. Make sure you are clear on whether this is included in your rate or if is an additional fee, as these costs can add up!

What level of service you get

So with the pricing tiers defined, let’s check the level of service your planners will look to deliver:

Full service: 10-15% of your total wedding budget

Your planners will deliver a complete end-to-end service that includes designing, sourcing, booking, and coordinating every detail you (and they) can think of. For a luxury destination wedding abroad, this is the ultimate high-end service, delivering an entirely stress-free, hands-off experience for you and your guests.

Partial service: £2,000-£5,000

Your planners will give you consultation support with specialist advice, recommendations, and a plan for your wedding and everything it needs 6-8 weeks beforehand. However, you’ll need to source, book, and coordinate everything yourself. A premium service that brings the experience you need while still having full control.

On-the-day service: £1,000-£2,500

Once you’ve sourced, booked, and coordinated everything, your planners will step in 4-6 weeks beforehand to finalise everything. They’ll then be on site to take over wedding-day direction from start to finish so everything runs smoothly for you – a more budget-friendly service, but one that still delivers everything you and your guests expect.

For all these service options, remember your planner may have a minimum fee. This covers their time, insurance, staffing, and other operational fees.

What can affect the cost of your destination wedding planner?

With so many moving parts and variables, even the smallest change or addition can affect your costings. But alongside location, budget, and service level, one of the biggest factors in both venue and planning costs is the number of guests.

A small, intimate wedding of 20 guests can be planned with a partial or on-the-day service to deliver a seamless event. A larger-scale event with 200 guests, especially a luxe wedding abroad, will demand the experience, staff, and standards of a full-service approach so everything goes according to plan.

Is a destination wedding planner worth the investment?

Using a destination wedding planner goes beyond a box-ticking exercise. Every moment is considered with style, grace, and elegance so the whole day feels effortless. While there may be elements you could do yourself, you’re investing in a priceless experience that brings clarity, confidence, and expertise to the entire process.
